Be a part of a Musical Legacy at Oakton High School!
UPDATE: We exceeded our goal of collecting $9,000, which was the estimated amount of the commission. It is possible that the final cost of the commission could exceed our original estimate, depending on the final length of the commissioned piece. Once we have received the final pricing for the commission, we will provide a full accounting of the amount collected vs. the cost of the commission. Should the amount collected exceed the final cost of the commission, we will make a determination as to how to treat the excess, as part of our FY10 budget process, and would encourage your feedback at that time. The Oakton High School Band Boosters have commissioned a musical piece by noted composer Philip Sparke Everyone is looking for a good investment these days- one that has enduring value. Here is your opportunity to be a part of a legacy for the Oakton High School Band Department. Noted composer Philip Sparke (www.philipsparke.com) has accepted our commission to create an original piece of music especially for our band. Next spring, our band will have the honor of premiering this piece. It will forever contain the words "commissioned by the Oakton High School Bands" under the title. Commissioning original music is a new experience for our band program but other prestigious Fairfax County bands have honored their students in the same way. Philip Sparke is Cheryl Newton's favorite composer and his works have captured the hearts our students as well. Last year, our band performed his "Hymn of the Highlands" at District Festival. Many audience members were quite moved by this piece and it is a distinct favorite among the students. We performed another one of his works, "Fiesta", at the District Festival this year. What better way to honor the hard work and accomplishments of all these students and their supporters than to commission a musical work in their honor? It will serve as a lasting tribute to the Oakton Band Program. We need your support. The cost to commission this work is $9,000 and we are collecting donations to cover the expense. We recognize that economic times are tough right now and any amount you wish to give is sincerely appreciated. Remember, BBOHS is a 501(c) (3) organization and your donations may be tax deductible. Check with your tax advisor. Please see our current donor list - we would love to add you to this! Please mark your check "donation" and mail it to: Denise Wertheim 12103 Old Pine Way Oak Hill, VA, 20171 OR Donate Here using Paypal |
